I imagine kevlar is not the sort of thing you can find at JoAnns or Mills End, but that is the first thing I thought of.

A first I thought you were high. But barge cemented pleather inside (it's not visible) may work. Pleather is harder to pierce than Elk hide.

I'm not sure fabric will work. The original was trigger and had holes all over. The layer will be inside and never visible- so content isn't an issue.
