It struck Suzaku as very, very ironic-embarrassing, even-that he was asking the one person who hadn’t been in class for help. If his sleep-addled brain wasn’t wrong, Lelouch’s seat had been conspicuously empty throughout Physics class. That is, he had registered the lack of a person occupying said desk and chair, before succumbing to the soporific effects of the Physics lecture on…on what? Hell, he didn’t even know what he was going to ask Lelouch for help on.
He pushed open the door to the roof, textbook tucked uncomfortably under his elbow, and winced a little at the bright sunlight after the dimness of the stairwell. Lelouch was leaning comfortably against the railings, with a thick book in hand.
“Hello,” said Lelouch amiably. “Is it lunchtime already?” He put down his book, looking just the slightest bit amused. Suzaku felt the corner of his mouth twist downward in a grimace.
He strode over to slump down beside Lelouch, and with no further ado, plopped the textbook down between the two of them. Lelouch just looked at the book, then at Suzaku, biting his lip. Suzaku sighed. “If you wouldn’t mind, Lelouch?”
The black-haired boy allowed himself a small chuckle, and agreeably hefted the textbook onto his lap. “Very well,” he laughed. “What topic this time?” A finger hovered lightly at the head of the contents page of the book. Suzaku shrugged, an embarrassed jerking of the shoulders. Lelouch grinned and flipped to the centre, showing that he had known all along. “You know, the teachers must have a very bad impression of Britannian soldiers. Lazy, poor students that they are.”
Suzaku defended himself. “I’m the only soldier that still goes to school, so that doesn’t exactly count.” He glared at Lelouch. “And I wasn’t the only one asleep in class today. In fact, at least I was even in class!”
“Fine, fine,” Lelough conceded. “Anyway, the next topical test is on magnets…surely a simple read-through will be sufficient for you?” He returned the textbook to Suzaku. “After all, you operate a Knightmare. This is basic physics.”
“Lelouch. I operate one. I don’t design it. Would it kill you to just explain it to me before I die a miserable death?” Suzaku pointed out testily, already envisioning Lloyd’s teasing about his grades. He pushed the book towards his friend.
Lelouch coughed a bit. “Basically, a magnet is something that produces a magnetic field. It attracts or repels other magnets, and certain metals are attracted to one. It attracts and repels on the basis that opposite poles attract, like poles repel. Okay so far?”
Suzaku valiantly managed to nod, a movement that Lelouch took as encouragement to continue.
“The magnetization of an object is the local value of its magnetic moment per unit volume, usually denoted M, with units A/m. It is a vector field, rather than just a vector, because the different sections of a bar magnet generally are magnetized with different directions and strengths…are you listening?”
Suzaku blinked several times trying to appear something other that utterly, completely bored and out of his depth. “Sorry, what?”
It was Lelouch’s turn to get short-tempered. “Look. Simply put, opposite poles attract, like poles repel. Okay?” He frowned. “Okay?”
Suzaku had been staring somewhat dazedly at Lelough’s mouth throughout the last bit of his lecture. Lelouch’s lips were like a thin folded piece of origami, like a pink paper rose he’d once folded when he was young, and he’d-
He found his mouth pressed firmly against Lelouch’s, and felt the dryness of his lips, parted in mid-speech and in shock. With great reluctance, he wrenched himself away, to fall backwards on his hands, heart buzzing in his chest. “Yeah, yeah, I get it.” He smiled at Lelouch, who merely gaped at back at him. “Opposite poles attract…and like poles repel?”
