Goddamn, Sarah Palin's town made rape victims pay for their own forensic kits when she was mayor? that's fucked up.

Oh. my. gods.

I am seriously SCARED of this woman getting any more power, and I'm on the other side of the planet here. (this is Nadya commenting, from work, so not logged in.)

I mean, okay to be fair I don't know how much that has to do with her leadership and how much it is the result of other people's heartlessness, but DAMN! That is just so twisted and obviously fucked up I find it hard to believe anyone would even go there. Ugggghhhh. BRB excommunicating myself from this planet

OMG wrong.

I keep learning more and more things about her and her choices/beliefs/etc that I disagre with so much it scares me.

They won't win. Right? They can't possibly! Please...

That's so wrong, you're in enough pain as it is when something like that has happened...and then you hear yep, you will pay for this WTF!! that's not normal!

Over here everyone was a fan of Hillary and now of Obama
McCain doesn't even get mentioned in the news, once or twice in combination with Palin facts on a talkshow...I don't like her at all from what I've heard, and this rapekit policy of hers makes me feel sick to my stomach!

I heard about this. FWIW I also think it's really fucked up to make pet owners pay for euthanization. It's ONE SHOT, just eat the damn cost and have some compassion.

But the rape kit thing is worse because it's a sign of a community that's not interested in preventing rape.

ha! I really don't think those two things are even remotely comparable in the least and to even mention them in the same post is a little bit offensive

You're right. I wasn't actually trying to compare them. That was just a connection that my brain immediately made, probably because my dog died a month ago. I didn't make that clear. No feminist cookie for me.

but, were the rape victims responsible for the cost, really? It says that they tried to bill the victims' insurance companies whenever possible....and then i sort of assumed that the police picked up the rest, they just wanted to try to have the insurance companies pay if they could. i don't really see anything wrong with that. I had to get rabies shots and of course the county pays for that if you can't...but they charge your insurance and then pick up the rest of the cost. maybe i got it wrong though, about this. but i do think that charging insurance companies first wouldn't be that bad of an idea.

I still think there's something creepy and exploitative about it. People whose houses have been burgled aren't billed for the fingerprint tests. There's an op-ed in the NYtimes about it: "We shouldn't expect rape victims to pay for their tests just because their bodies happen to be the crime scene."
