Over at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, the SBs are discussing a "creative writing textbook" (The College Handbook of Creative Writing) that makes me glad I could never fit that creative writing class into my schedule in college. Here's the excerpt that made me roll my eyes so hard they almost flew out of my skull:

I must say I was blessed with a creative writing teacher that insisted that you can't have a good story if you don't have good characters. "Don't make characters for your plot, make a plot for your characters. Let your characters tell you what they're going to do and why." Or that was the basic gist of it...I must admit...the class was too short for me...
