Yet another comfortable breezy night in Los Angeles. It was a little warmer today than it has been the past several, but even todays heat was nothing compared to the average day in Athens. As a quick comparison for those who are curious, I feel that the traffic here is better than Atlanta, the pollution is on level with Atlanta, the weather is ( Read more... )

I'm glad to hear you are alive and well. Don't sweat it about making contacts. It'll happen, but probabaly not the way you expect it to. Don't forget to make contacts with others students as well. They will be your professional contacts in the next few years. Good luck!

Some of that stuff you are describing sounds pretty damned badass. Especially the projector with a 6 color starting field. Mmmmm, color.

I know you're just trying to make me feel better, because I didn't get to go. You're really having the time of your life, aren't you? ^_~

Of course not! I'm close to 4,000 miles away from my beloved Eli! How could I possibly be enjoying myself?! Today was a good bit better as I was in classes targeted to students/teachers about resumes, portfolios, demo reels etc so I actually got a lot of very useful stuff today, but in general the conference was really just way too big ^^;. I was finally able to start talking to people without it being horribly awkward today at least, but still getting contacts is virtually impossible since they've already had to talk to probably over 100 students already that day, and have recieved crates and crates of demo reels. And since getting contacts was one of my main goals for coming here in the first place... well, it's a little dissapointing =P

However, had you been here it would have been infinitely better, if anything else because I'd at least have someone to talk to here instead of constantly wondering what the heck I should do next =P

Believe me, I was seriously considering it this year, but like other years, it just wasn't in the budget. :-( I am going to go to a game conference in Austin in September. Hopefully I can make some contacts there.
By the way, feel free to pass on any demo reel/misc advice you got. I need all the help I can get. ^^;

Sounds awesome! You thinking about working for weta?

Of course I'm thinking of working for Weta =P They actually were hiring for all positions at a job fair here, except that in order to get a NZ visa they need to demonstrate some reason why a random kiwi yahoo couldn't do the job instead (thus experience), and so they told me it would probably be best to start in LA ^^; They were very friendly though. The first thing I told the lady at the booth was that if she got me a job at weta, I'd cover her shift at the booth the next day :3 She was very grateful but had to politely decline =P There are actually other companies in New Zealand that work for special effects too. I got a pamphlet on them and will be contacting them soon :3
