Musings

Certain themes keep recurring in my interests and desires. My artist statement that I am currently composing is one of those expressions which drives me to look at what I have learned, and where I have come from and ask if this is indeed where I need to be at this moment.

But I find myself coming up short. My time is lost to lab reports, catalogue designs and even to helping friends in need. I can't believe that I even considered dating -- at the moment, I would be one of the worst partners I can think of. I was starkly reminded of that when I saw Jack and Maya together, their playful banter and intimate relationship is sometimes a burden.

I wish to build community, conversations, and be more active. To that end, I hope to attend a WIE Symposium on whether or not Humans are good for the planet. Its a fair topic, and one I hope to address in a series of blogs and essays myself. Its important because even as we think of ourselves as the pinnacle of evolution, we are the direct cause of much extinction and pain and suffering -- both for us and for our children's children.

As much as the life of an academic is appealing to me, I see my ultimate desire to be the acquiring of tools and the use of them for the greater good of humanity. I see that good as being equally divided in the creation of unique worlds where we can encounter the issues most relevant to us today, and escape from them -- where we can enjoy the limits of our imagination and revitalize communities which are falling to the wayside.

I see my role as that of advocate, scholar and author/artist. I will advocate an approach to contemporary politics, issues and social problems that is both compassionate and realistic through my writings and through my interactions. I will express my point of view through time based media, visual art, and writing and especially once my visual language has been further developed. My brainchild it may be, but I think it has a place in the technology and communication of the future

Part of those themes, therefore, is the "Environment" and necessarily "Sustainability"

This is the part that I see as essential: Humanity must reconcile itself with the rest of the world, and with its current existential crisis of Peak Oil, Sustainable food, population, and Global Warming. My hopes are that through expressing specific solutions, and by prodding readers into grappling with these problems, I will be taking a step in the direction of what some might call destiny..

Another part is "Community"

Here is where the idea of a tribe comes in. I do believe humans were not meant to live in isolated single family dwellings. Instead I see myself occupying a position in a tribe, hopefully one that shares much in common with me in terms of entertainment, skills and interests, but which also has many significant variations.

A third part is "Creative Innovation/Expression/Synthesis"

This is where my Senior project starts to take shape: Yes, we are facing some of the most challenging times in our history as a species. Yes, we really should be saying things to each other which words cannot express. Yes, I am very much at home in academia, and feel that the intense study and advancement of the art of narrative conception is my cup of tea, even as I bring to light these other issues.

Well, that about sums it up. Perhaps more directed entries, no? I've posted two entries on my blog at the Clarice Smith Center for Performing arts, and hope to have the Archery club web site up later today.
