This weekend

I did go to europæisk middelalderfestival after all, and I'm glad I did. My lovely friend Kirsten cancelled her engagements for the day to go with me to a small provincial town in the other end of the country (how nice of her was that?? ^_^). The weather wasn't very nice, and I couldn't find my liripipe hood when I left, so I was cold, but it didn't really bother me. There was lots of good music there, though it was the same bands that you see at every Danish market, but it's bound to be that way, when so few people are interested in medieval things. Schelmish was fun as always.
I got some great dark green pure wool fabric there. Some guy wanted the same fabric, but I was hogging the roll, so I got it all. It was only 4.5 meters anyway, and I usually use about 5 meters on a medieval type dress. There were lots of people there in costume, some of them had obviously just thrown something together for the occasion, while others had really made an effort. I found some lovely shoes with a printed pattern, but they only had them in size 37 (I believe that must be about size 6 in US sizes?), so the owner said I could order some from him if I wanted them in my size. They cost about 900 kr, which isn't that much when they're reconstructions of period examples. I really wanted some silver buttons for the sleeves of my black dress (yes, black is period, but expensive), but there weren't any that I liked.
Some guy asked Kirsten and I if he could make a suggestion, and we said yes. So he tells us that there may be something we like on the other side of that tent over there. We were going in that direction anyway, so we went there. At first I was a little puzzled, because I couldn't see what he had meant, but then it occurred to me; a chain-mail bra! (Nooooo, take it away!) Hah, I wonder why he thought we might like that...

Rant about 'nervøs velour' (crushed velvet? The thin shiny kind, that curls up on itself):
Yes yes, I know we are all in the hobby for fun but be reasonable... Crushed velvet??? That terrible fabric that doesn't look right, doesn't feel right and doesn't fall right. It's such a waste of time and money to spend months on an outfit and then it's totally out of period (and out of good taste). I mean, come on, do a little research. (Don't get me started on people who wear sneakers with period costumes...) I'm aware that not everyone are able to pay (or won't) for expensive fabrics, but there are less expensive alternatives too. And any hobby, if taken seriously, will require you to invest a bit of money in it. But if you just want to make a costume from your imagination, then I guess this festival would be the perfect occasion to wear it, as there are both serious re-creationists and people dressing up for fun there. (Just don't expect me to like crushed velvet!)
I'm a proud member of the crushed velvet haters brigade! XD

Right now I'm painting Ysh and impatiently waiting for her body, which might come today...
