Summary: He’s changed
He’s changed.
That was the first thing she noticed. He used to argue and moan, sure. But he was never violent, never went in with his fists when he could use words instead. She’d always figured that was Pop’s influence.
He won’t look at her either. She didn’t notice that at first, she was so glad he was back.
And he hasn’t asked after Ma.
People think she’s dumb ‘cause sometimes she can’t get the words out right, or that she’s an airhead because of the way she dresses. But she grew up in the neighbourhood, grew up with the shadow of Zuko’s old man hanging over her head. She probably knows more about the way the mob works than some of these so-called ‘experts’.
So she wonders what Ray had to do while he was undercover that would make him act this way. She wonders what he’s ashamed of.
She also wonders what he sees in Stella Kowalski because, for all his talk of true love and love at first sight, her brother’s always been slow to fall. And if he was going to fall, Madame States Attorney really isn’t his type. He prefers dark hair, simple values: traditional Italian-Catholic girls. A career woman who most definitely does not want kids is a complete switch.
And that makes her wonder too. Ray always wanted a heap of kids, talked about how he was going to raise them right (Pop’s influence again). If he’s changed his mind about the kids, maybe he’s changed his mind about being the kind of guy who can raise them right.
If she asked Ray he’d lie or refuse to say anything. He’d call it protecting her, but dammit, she doesn’t need protecting. She works in a Police Station, she’s seen people at their worst before, she’s even spent the day with a corpse for God’s sake.
He’s her brother and whatever he’s done, whatever’s haunting him, he’s come home safe. That’s all she cares about. That’s all that matters.
And anybody who says anything different is going to have to come through her.
Capiche?
