Gone Are The Days
She stopped his hand from moving further down her neck. “Stop.”
Nooj did but stared. He kept his flesh hand in her grip. His other held the handle of his cane. He didn’t say anything but she knew what he thought, what he was thinking. “I have them. That’s all you needed to know,” she answered, eyes carefully scanning the area for Rikku, Yuna and anyone else who shouldn’t hear their conversation. Once convinced there was no one eavesdropping, she looked up to him and smiled slightly, her muscled unused to the movement made it even more awkward.
“Paine.” He spoke monotonously but she could read the hundreds of emotions in his voice. She shook her head and squeezed his hand.
“It’s okay. I understand. Now. Stop thinking about it,” she shook her head, letting go of his hand but he wouldn’t do the same. “Nooj. Let go.”
“I’m sorry.” He was still living it, she realized before sighing heavily.
“We’re alive. You moved on and so have I. Let go, Nooj.” She replied sternly before pulling her hand forcibly from his and stepped away.
She didn’t look back when she left to rejoin the others. Nooj needed a quick end to the shadows of their past. She did, too. It helped, not looking at him once and not hearing her name from his lips.
It was over. Everything was.
There was no need to relive it. They were alive and that was all that mattered. She smiled ruefully before wiping it off her face as Rikku and Yuna came up to her. It was time to let go of the past; she didn’t need to live in the past anymore. Nooj needed to understand that and do the same thing. Whatever they had, past and everything else, was gone.
With the pull of the trigger so many years ago.
