1000 Years of Peace

Why do you suppose the peace in the end of The Revelation of St. John only lasts a thousand years?

Numerology, of course! It's the Bible after all. What does 1000 years really mean?

Because that is when they plug Neo back into the Matrix...right?! [grin]

Actually, the idea of its relation to gematria is apropos, as the Book of Revelation is a treasure trove for the would-be gematrian.

One value of 1000:

1000 is the gematria value of the Hebrew word 'ThM', meaning whole, complete or perfect.

hmm... very interesting. My line of thinking was that it doesn't last forever because it isn't perfect.

Well, if you are a literalist then this would be an inherent truth based on the statement. But, I believe that the Book of Revelations is 'entirely' symbolic. For me it is not a prophesy, but a revelation or insight into St. John's own interior process. Perhaps, an inner rite of passage akin to Dante's work.

Just a thought...

The most basic hermetic principle is "that which is above is as that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above." Anything that can be interpreted on a microcosmic level can also be interpreted on a macrocosmic level. I'm not exactly taking it literally. The point that I was fixating on was that the period of peace does end. St. John did know the difference between a finite block of time and "forever." The fact that the story doesn't end at that point means that the process wasn't complete - perfection had not yet been reached. The second resurrection hasn't even happened at that point. I find it interesting that such a long block of time was used to represent that stage in the process. I think it's indicative of it seeming like the end goal, which causes a plateau. Eventually Satan is unchained again, which initiates the next stage in the process.

words are used for "peace" and "thousand".

The text was originally written in Greek. The Greek text is pretty easy to find. Unfortunately, I don't know the language.

I just saw this on another blog and thought of you:

"Ultimately what we're touching is the invisible, all-pervasive Intelligence that surrounds us and penetrates us. It is grooming us to be able to tolerate its splendor. It can't just reveal itself openly because we would be forfeited; we'd never know what hit us." -Terence McKenna
