Discussion the last: Episode 314

Jun 05, 2006 14:11

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to these discussions over the 56 episodes in question.

Tonight's episode was directed by Kelly Makin (as we heard 500 times on the DVD extras) and written by Ron and Dan themselves. Not, as we will see, their best effort, but they did at least give B/J a fitting ending.

A. I love the way Brian and Justins' hands intertwine in that scene.

B. Hell yeah. Also the way Justin looks at Brian as they sit in the bar and wait for the final count on the TV. He's so totally hot for him!
Also the look between Brian and Justin on the bed. Complete understanding, and peace. Also the final frame of those two in the street amidst the celebration - holding onto each other with such affectionate closeness ...
And I'm not mentioning the obvious corollary in public. *coughs*

C. Lol! Another Blue Light Special! Oh, that handwashing scene - they both look so sexybeautiful in that light.

D. I say it's evens.

I was avoiding discussing the actors' personal lives. But if you want to say they're bad actors (as I'm sensing you do!) go right ahead. Knock yourself out. Examples required in evidence as usual, of course. You're also welcome to expand on Cowlip's inadequacies as writers if you wish. (Hell, in their case I'll make an exception and you can expand on their inadequacies as people.)

As for your thank-you, you're most welcome, and thank you for your contributions. I agree that the jokes and snarks from the contributors have been a lovely antidote to S4-5.

1. I always thought it had to do something with Brian's blue lights over the bed. So we would know blue is their color. We certainly couldn't be creative and think of them in any other color.

2. I think Brian and Emmett admire their respective strengths. Emmett is the one person that doesn't fawn over Brian and (thank God) vice versa.

3. Justin is in Jimmny Cricket mode.

4. I think all of this is the set up for Brian to start Kinnetic. Obviously, he has to get fired, do the commercial, save the day, win Justin's heart 4 evah.

5. In total agreement with starflower516. I think Brian knows that the tape will bring down Stockwell. I always thought he was kinda relieved that Deekins wouldn't take it. Now the Concerned Citizens can act and Brian can be anonymous (for awhile ( ... )

3. Justin is in Jimmny Cricket mode.

Now there's a fascinating concept! Say more?

314 is one of my favorite episodes. I, too, love the looks between Brian and Justin. They are united in their own world and united to the outside world.

Yes, for the first and the last time. It was just the perfect ending for them. I love the contrast between 301, when Brian has everything (including a Mies coffee table) except Justin and is totally bereft, and the end of 314, where he has nothing but Justin and is completely content. Kelly Makin's idea of using the steps to shoot them as equals by cutting out the height difference was one of the few ideas the "creative team" had after S1 that was a really good one.

Thanks for being such a regular contributor; I've really enjoyed your ideas.

Until his complete character assassination, Justin operated as Jimmny Cricket. He was "on to" Brian and provided that conscious that we who loved Brian knew he had, but he didn't always want to admit.

I think in this scene (the liquid television) Justin is purposely shot in the background, but his voice his in the forefront gently chiding (you know you shouldn't have bought that television, and gently, but, snidely saying when the first thing Brian sees is the Stockwell commercial, 'isn't that just the way'). Brian's pained expression shows that the remarks hit the mark.

I love your line about contrasting 301 and 314, and of course, the steps as equals.

Can I just put in a little sigh for the world's best hug (Brian rocks Justin when Stockwell loses)? We'll ignore Justin's Amazing Disappearing Beer just before and Debbie's Ear-Piercing Shrieking just after. That also reminds me that the only Ben/Hunter/Michael thing worth watching in this ep was Hunter's second-best hug in the world of Ben ( ... )

Another question might be why Brian doesn't tell him what he's doing

That's a good point, however if Justin had just been nagging me about buying a new TV when I just got fired, I probably wouldn't confide to him that I'm considering putting myself $100K in debt to impress him.

Let's assume, however, that it doesn't occur to Brian that he's going to do that until after he's made the ad and been turned down by Deekins. Why not confide in Justin up to that point? I think because his motivation for going into superhero mode is that he doesn't want Justin to be resigned and cynical: he likes him optimistic and idealistic even though he gives him shit for it. He's scared that Deekins is going to turn him down and Justin will just get his hopes dashed again (remember he voiced cynicism about both sides of politics back in 304 or whenever). I agree that that's still not working as a team, but Justin did throw the ball to him, and Brian is, for good or ill, a Rescuer.

He's done his posters and handed out flyers, and realized that Brian ( ... )
