Can any of the techo whizzes out there on my flist recommend foolproof software for taking an .avi file and turning it into a newly burned DVD? *Bats eyes appealingly*

I have a working CD/DVD burner. The computer is a bit old and has a Celeron chip, but it's got 2.2GHz of grunt, around 700 Mb RAM and 14 spare Gb on the HDD. I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

I bought Nero 7, but it does literally nothing, except that I can burn an .avi file to a data disc (big whoop). It won't even do a VCD, let alone a DVD. So, with Nero going back to the shop forthwith, are there simple, easier-on-the-computer alternatives for this specific task?

If you were thinking of suggesting I seek online support from Nero, please don't. I tried, but you'd need a degree in computing to understand the process you have to follow to register a complaint.
