The definitive drabble that proves that I've gotten into this fandom.

With Every Footfall Another Shadow

Everyday on the Destiny Islands, the weather is the same. It is always sunny with a slight breeze that pulls Kairi’s hair back behind her (adorably, he thinks), and there are white clouds dotted in the sky that are far enough away from each other to give one an unobstructed view up and up and up.

At night the stars come out. He likes to lie on his back and watch them, and sometimes he reaches his hand out and just leaves it there, hovering, perpendicular to his body. His fingertips look so close to the little pinpricks of light, but he can’t touch them yet, and he’s still swamped in darkness. He thinks, “Soon,” and says, “Soon” out loud, and tomorrow they’ll keep building the raft and dreaming of another beach, and he’ll keep thinking that maybe there’s a place that’s different from here.

-

This dark place is cold, and there are always goosebumps on his skin. There are voices that taunt him and a lurking chill that hides in his chest, and there’s a woman beside him always that smiles cruelly at him and speaks to him and her words drip lies onto his head.

He doesn’t reach out anymore because there is no light he can see, not here.

But in a lot of ways, he likes it here.

In a lot of ways, he wants to stay.
