Gotta question for you--what's your favorite fairy tale? I'm trying to collect ideas for my art portfolio, and I've got a great one simmering, but I need a list of fairy tales that people actually like, not necessarily just the obscure ones that delight my dirty heart.
You know the Irish one about the girl who has to weave shirts out of nettles for her brothers who have been turned into swans? That one's my favorite. (Funny story: for many years, I thought I'd hallucinated its existence.)
I'm doing a series of stories-as-paintings for my portfolio, and to be put online--that's a really good one. (Have you read the novel based on it, Daughter of the Forest? It's a novel series, now, about her daughter, but the first one was just that tale, and very good.)
I'm probably starting with Red Riding Hood, 'cause it's scary and a bit lewd and not one of the ones that says 'look, how stupid women are!' so much. If this is going to be kind of a feminist epic, or an epic at any rate, I would rather pick the ones where the girls don't have to be saved. (I'll be using my mother's Red Riding Hood, though, the one where she takes a knife down in with her...)
