and now for the moment you've been waiting for

it's been awhile. my life has been exciting and yet not in the past, like, month since i've posted. i know the suspense is killing everyone, so here's what has transpired.

1. I Went To New York
for FREE! thank you, jim barksdale. no, seriously, i mean it. the weekend was fantasticheski. friday was spent walking all over the entire city with dsg. mimi and i continually fell behind because each of dsg's strides equals 4 of our strides, and by "our" i mean anyone shorter than 6 feet, and also due to striking up conversations with the locals. we saw wall street, the statue of liberty (literally, only saw from a distance, but hey), ground zero, some pier by the brooklyn bridge, the entire brooklyn bridge which we walked across, soho and chinatown. mimi and i then hit up this peanut butter cafe in greenwhich village, where we tried all the varieties of peanut butter ever and had peanut butter milkshakes that were soooooooooooo good. friday night jennifer and i went to the vodka room, a super posh russian restaurant, but the wait was way too long so we went across the street to russian samovar, a slightly less posh russian restaurant. a big beefy dude named sasha checked our coats (just like russia!) and the hostess and bartender immediately started speaking to us in russian - i guess they thought we were russian - so we just started answering back in russian. the bartender was amazed that we spoke better russian than his son, sasha, who checked our coats and we were treated to ice cream, blinis and shots of vodka. then as we got our coats and headed out the door, sasha told us that we owed him $2 each for the mandatory coat check (just like russia!)

saturday i wandered around central park and found strawberry fields, the john lennon memorial and the dakota. we ate lunch in little korea, where i ordered a clam soup that had a surprising number of shrimp heads in it. then we ventured to the museum of sex, where i learned the difference between a kink and a fetish, the most popular kinks and fetishes, such as giantism, dressing in furry animal suits, and blowing up balloons, as well as the history of pornography. saturday night we dressed up and went to an AMAZING dinner also paid for by jim barksdale (seriously, i love this man), then mimi, ben and i went to toys 'r' us and the empire state building. afterwards we went to a bar, where we wowed pretty much everyone with our inspired dance moves, such as making phone and dialing motions during "867-5309" and shooting each other during "shot to the heart." everyone was jealous. sunday we flew back and that's about it.

2. I Defended My Damn Thesis
i was very well received, despite some minor mishaps, such as the dm printing my thesis defense at 4 instead of 4:45, 2 of my readers being 30 minutes late and forgetting to click my powerpoint slides until valentina whispered "mary!" and made a clicking motion. i passed "with flying colors." the only downside was that no one thought to bring champagne. the best part of the day was that i got to wear my thesis defense dress, the dress that i bought specifically for my thesis defense to motivate myself to finish my thesis - because no thesis=no thesis defense.

3. America's Next Top Model Was A Recap Episode
the title speaks for itself, but does not effectively convey how deeply saddened i am by this.

4. Double Decker
i was a volunteer at the 10k and stood for the duration of the race at the corner of university and old taylor, cheering people on, telling them to take a right, and encouraging them to finish the race because there was pizza at the end. and i got to see emily faulks! i also saw mimi's steel band. saturday night we went to the blues club in clarksdale to celebrate matt sharpe's birthday (happy late birthday!), where we were attacked by an elderly drunk woman. sunday i went to bottletree and said teary goodbyes with emily.

the end.
