The lack of decent rebuttals

One of the most frustrating things about watching politics is the complete lack of decent rebuttals. Watching Hardball right now, a guest from the right is repeatedly claiming that drilling in ANWR will make us energy independent, while the guest from the left doesn't point out that the oil in ANWR could, at best, provide a few percent of our ( Read more... )

According to the first figures I found upon googling, ANWR would provide an additional .7% to the total amount of fuel. Iraq barely controls 4.7% of the oil economy, and we have murdered thousands of people and violated at least four UN resolutions for that oil. In Alaska, we would only have to murder some polar bears and carribou, while violating a treaty with Canada. How can you be opposed to this!

My main problem with it is the fact that we said we wouldn't. We said we wouldn't drill the black hills, we said we wouldn't settle Ohio, we said we wouldn't... a lot of things. Well, the black hills is now a national park to the battles we fought over that gold. Ohio is now one of the states that candidates fight for. Alaska will, some day, be a symbol either of our inability to keep our word to other countries, or of our greed.
