Vista: I've not much experience with it, but from some of the reviews I've seen, you're going to need a hoss of a machine to just run it [with the bells & whistles]. Granted, you can turn them off [I think], but more RAM, a good video card, and a faster hard drive are required to make it pretty. And therefore worth the upgrade. Then you have to think of the apps, which are often poorly written themselves. Hell, and XP is just getting respectable. All I'm saying is that I'm not moving to Vista until they cut off support for XP.

Dell is alright, but make sure you get an extended warranty. I'd recommend a Mac, but I don't know that they do your engineering apps. As for the hardware, make sure you get a Core 2 Duo. The Core 2 Duo Quad-whatever isn't worth it, at the moment. You won't be able to get an AMD processor from Dell, and if I'm right, the Core 2 Duo is still the best on the market for consumers. And get at least 1 GB of RAM, more if possible. A faster hard drive [RPM], is important, especially if you get Vista. For a ( ... )
