My absolutely favorite books!

Jul 26, 2012 21:13

I was inspired by a fellow LJ friend to write out a list of my favorite books. I am currently reading a new book that I'm enjoying, but I always am looking for new recommendations. So, if any of you would like to share a favorite book, please do! (The more depressing, the better).

Also, despite mixed opinions on re-reading, the only books I reread ( Read more... )

public post, musings, my opinions

First of all, thanks for your suggestions! :)

"Less than Zero" sort of sounds like a sophisticated, darker Gossip Girl. I don't mean that in a bad way!

"Freedom" looks quite interesting, although it seems a bit daunting due to it's length and Tolstoy comparisons! (I was never able to get very far with Anna Karenina) I read some reviews and the praise is really good!

I've read the Road awhile back, and I also enjoyed it very much. Cried because of that one too, oh man.

Thanks again!

I owns perks of being a wallflower... I haven't read it yet, but my gf has and loved it.
I also own the bell jar, but can't really get into it. I've kept it to attempt reading it again.

Well, I know you're out of high school, so the messages about getting through might be a little distant, but it's so worth it! I read it while I was in college, so I swear it doesn't matter!

How far have you gotten into the Bell Jar? I felt the same way until I read a paragraph about 30 pages in that startled and intrigued me because she has SUCH a knack for writing seemingly "unique struggles" so perfectly that you know you're not alone with those depressing thoughts.

I've only read Perks and Bell Jar and I own them both. I really identified with them both at the stages of life I read them. I look forward to reading the other books you listed!

I think the only one of these I've read is Animal Farm, I think twice (once in high school, once in college). And even though it was assigned reading, I enjoyed it more that most books that have been forced on me. But I like the sound of Sunset Limited. There are elements of your review that make me think you may like a movie that I won't name but will get you to watch anyway. Because I'm a rat bastard like that. :)

I wish I had been assigned more (or any) Orwell in high school. I got stuck with Dostoevsky and Huxley and fucking Cervantes, the cunt.

Oooh what movie! I have to know now!

Yes, please read the Sunset Limited, I really think you'll enjoy it and I'd even reread it again so we could discuss it!

Sadly I have heard of all of these, but haven't read any of them. Still, I'm glad you have good choices in books!

I like to *think* I have good taste in books, but I guess we're all a little arrogantly biased! ;)
What's your taste in books like?
