[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Barnaby Brooks, Jr.
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Canon: Tiger & Bunny
Timeline: post episode 10

Character History:
wikipedia; T&B wikia; TVTropes

Barnaby was once a cheerful young boy who lived with his two, nice parents in a happy expensive white-collar neighborhood. He had a pretty sweet life. His parents had money and he had modest birthday parties and liked cute little robots. However, his calm and seemingly-normal life was thrown to the ground and shattered into a million pieces when a (supposed) jerkass named Jake Martinez from the Ouroboros organization decided to murder them in a ridiculous fire, leaving the poor child orphaned. All he managed to remember about the night was the symbol on the man's hand and the silhouette of aforementioned jerkass in the dark, flaming building.

So, of course, Barnaby had a new driving force, and that was to find out who murdered his parents and answer the #1 question, "Why?" Barnaby began collecting articles and news clippings of anything revolving around the murder or the incident, trying to understand the symbol he saw. Sometime afterward, he discovered his abilities, which made him a NEXT. Capable of increasing his strength and speed by 100 times for five minutes, Barnaby soon had the skill to access a whole new tier of investigations.

Being a NEXT allowed him to attend the Hero Academy of Sternbild, where he was a popular and gifted student. He managed to graduate with high marks and soon became a Hero himself, becoming the first hero to give his name to the public. In public, Barnaby said (and still says) this is because he disagrees with the 'old-fashioned' style of heroics, with the masks and hiding identities; but--recently considered secretly--Barnaby also used this as a bit of a sign to the jerkwads who killed his parents, as if to say "hey look I'm coming after you 8|".

Intimidating secret plans aside, Barnaby started his Hero duties by throwing himself into the open and saving our resident favorite old fart of a hero, Wild Tiger. Wild Tiger was being his typical Wild Tiger self, which included failing in his usual fail style, and he managed to get himself dropped from the sky, to which Barnaby graciously hopped forth and caught him, rescuing him from imminent spiky doom. Then, revealing his face--what a good-looking face--he managed to become an instant fangirl favorite. To make matters worse, he was soon assigned to that lame old fart as a partner. Or rather, the lame old fart was assigned to him, because Barnaby's character and charisma were just better for a television audience.

Thus sparked the beginning of a rather disgusting half-friendship of Barnaby Brooks Jr. and the not-so-Wild Tiger, Kotetsu T. Kaburagi. Kotetsu took the liberty of giving Barnaby the much-hated nickname of "Bunny-chan", often mocking or scowling at him for trying to be so perfect in front of a camera. However, Kotetsu also became the first person to see Barnaby lose his cool. The two often couldn't cooperate--still can't all that often, actually--but they both managed on a few occasions, like when they had to get rid of a bomb and couldn't diffuse it (some days, you just can't get rid of them) or when their cooperation made their suits deliver an extra special blow in 'Good Luck mode'. Kotetsu ended up becoming one of the first to learn about why Barnaby was so angry about his parents, and was also there when he learned about the symbol.

(I swear, guys. This isn't supposed to be nearly as gay as it looks but... this series is just full of subtext. I don't plan on forcing or openly coming out with any sort of shipping preference; I just wanted to clarify that in case the application is a bit unclear. Most of Tiger & Bunny revolves more directly about Kotetsu's point-of-view but with a lot of Bunny's backstory. In the partnership, the story begins to revolve around both of them almost simultaneously rather than just one or the other once they start cooperating.)

Character Personality:
From the start, Barnaby Brooks Jr. looks like a young woman's dream: tall, good looks, kind smile, charming personality. And in many ways, Barnaby fits that mold almost perfectly. He's very friendly and courteous when it comes to dealing with the public and knowing what he should do. He knows how to handle being in the spotlight with a modest aura, and tends to accept praise and cheers with a smile and a polite thank you. He has no problem signing autographs and ruffling the hair of small children. When it comes to the Hero TV staff and 'acting normally', he puts on his most well-behaved, charismatic smile and does his best to appear cheerful. Part of the job is making the public love you, after all.

But not all is just fun and games in the life of Barnaby, celebrity hero. Barnaby is a hero, and that means helping others and working with people. He takes this job seriously enough to know that first and foremost, a hero has to protect the people. Be it another hero or a young child, Barnaby will easily put himself in harm's way to save another--within reason, of course. After all, his debut on the hero scene was saving his soon-to-be partner, Wild Tiger (or Kotetsu), and going after the troublesome culprit himself. He often thinks about strategies or ways to catch the villain in question with minimal damage to their surroundings, tending to take his job rather seriously when it comes to gathering points for the television program.

Unfortunately, part of Barnaby's hero act is also just for show. Part of the Hero TV system they work with offers points for citizens rescued and criminals captured. Early on, Kotetsu catches that Barnaby cares about the points, and he does, mostly because they give more popularity and incentive to the job. However, Barnaby thinks that most of the hero business is just an occupation. He doesn't need friendship or camaraderie while working with the other heroes. He doesn't care to get close to them because, overall, it's just a boring job with connections. He does seem to make sport of bothering Kotetsu to keep himself entertained, smirking after calling him an 'Old Man' and watching him get riled up after it. The two have an odd partnership.

However, working--especially with constant frustrations--brings forth Barnaby's more difficult traits: first off, he's a bit of a pain to work with. He likes getting the job done in his own way. Having attended Hero Academy and entering the rescuing world from the get-go, he often feels like he knows what he's doing a bit more than his partner. And because of this, he's less likely to cooperate with someone, especially if that person doesn't seem to know what he's doing... or is named Kotetsu. He gets frustrated arguing with Kotetsu in the middle of a high-tension situation or while trying to solve a difficult problem.

Frustration is usually what peels away his calm exterior and truly shows his emotions, the prime example, being the one thing that frustrates Barnaby the most: his parents' death. Barnaby's parents were murdered before his eyes, his only memory of the culprit being this mark of the Ouroboros on the man's skin. Because of this, any time the symbol is mentioned or catches Barnaby's eye, he's quickly riled up. He becomes more violent towards the criminal who bears the tattoo, and his judgment takes a turn for the reckless. A criminal has been killed because Barnaby couldn't control his temper and let his guard down. He tries harder to control this, but it's only worked a bit more in recent times, with his partner there to remind him to keep his cool.

It doesn't help that Barnaby is also sometimes quite difficult to get along with. As proven in an interview with Karina, he tends to tease those who remind him of Kotetsu. Because Karina's spirit and views were similar, he had no problem mocking her on a radio show. This is just for fun, due to how he sees the entire 'hero' business. Because it's just a job to him, he has no problem messing around with his coworkers, even if it makes him seem like a jerk to some of them. He doesn't get close to them for a long time because he doesn't see them as 'friends'. Though, oddly enough, he does warm up to the other heroes because they work together so often; he probably doesn't even realize it.

He has a difficult time connecting with people on an emotional basis. When the hero facade falls, one's left with a blunt, almost tactless Barnaby who acts on his own interests and what personally drives him. Part of his hero business may be just to find out the murderer of his parents and to understand and stop those who bear the symbol. But outside of being the hero, he's quite odd around others. He doesn't spend time for fun social interactions, and he doesn't celebrate his birthday--in fact, he becomes frustrated when Kotetsu tries to plan a birthday surprise for him. He doesn't have hobbies, save for looking up clues, and he can't have a normal conversation to save his life. Only most recently has this attitude begun to crumble.

The only few individuals he's been able to connect with on a more emotional level are his old maid and sitter, Samantha Taylor, and his surrogate father and head of HeroTV, Albert Maverick. Samantha had been around since Barnaby was little, and he often refers to her as an 'aunt'. When his parents were killed, she became his only true 'family' left, and he treasures her dearly. She's very sweet, and he tends to call her when he just needs a motherly, familiar face to speak to. She also bakes him a crumble cake for his birthday each year. Maverick too had been part of Barnaby's life before his parents died; when he was in the orphanage, he spent lots of time with Maverick, treating this man like a father figure. Maverick is one of the few people Barnaby truly confides in, to the point where Barnaby finds himself in the older man's office whenever he's having a bad day and just needs advice. Besides his parents, these are the only two he truly grew close to, until Kotetsu.

After seeing Kotetsu's determination to help, he has a deep desire to get the older hero to trust him--since he's only just begun to fully trust his coworker--but at the moment it's only a quiet wish of his own. But, in the end, he's pretty selfish and runs on his own ideals. Not fully the portrait of the picturesque hero, now is he?

Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
For any abilities your character possesses not already elaborated in Personality. Includes street fighting abilities, martial arts prowess, genius-level cooking, or skills in any field.

Barnaby's quick and strong. Due to his NEXT abilities, he's able to amplify his natural strength and speed by 100--but only for five minutes; therefore, he trains nearly daily in order to remain quick and fast on his feet, even when his powers aren't activated. He's very limber and flexible. His fighting style has to deal more with quick kicks than punches, often capable of backflips or spins in order to make his kicks more powerful.

As for brains, he's smart and just as quick mentally. He's very apt at understanding new technology, capable of picking up the new specifics of his Hero suit upon the first explanation. Not to mention, he's extremely good at investigation. Having investigated his parents' murder to some of the finest, most hard-to-uncover details, he's got a very sharp eye and very nice investigation skills. From court dates to hidden files, Barnaby's found a way to get a ridiculous amount of information, which he's been searching for by himself since childhood.

Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Most of his weaknesses were covered in the personality section. His most nearly-fatal flaws are his temper and his difficulty of getting along with others. Teamwork is seen as only something to keep the paychecks coming, and he'll cooperate as long as necessary - to a point. Most situations turn into "Do things Barnaby's way or it risks failure and he insults you the entire time." This has, more often than not, caused him to get in a rather sticky situation when it comes to two-person projects or getting things done faster and without bickering. It's gotten better... but not by much.

Not just that, but once he's angry, he's blindingly angry and reasoning with him just does not work. It gets to the point where he becomes overly focused, fixated even, on the direct goal in front of his eyes, and loses sight of the bigger picture. There have been quite a few times when he's been told to refrain from doing anything until he's calmed down, or has been held back from lashing out because of his temper. He doesn't get this angry too often - most of it comes from when he's against someone who may have information or has hurt his loved ones - but once his temper flares, it takes a good deal of holding him back and reminding him to calm the hell down before he actually does it.

He's also stubborn as hell and quite stand-offish, which may make or break him in the near future. He's not prone to listening to others when he's already got his mind set on something, and he tends to keep his distance from those who he doesn't trust or gets very testy with them if they try to pry too much. Not only that but this boy doesn't feel the ~need~ for medical treatment unless he's bleeding all over the place. Word of God says that, even after a very ridiculously violent battle in the near future, Barnaby just went home to sleep off bruises and whatnot instead of, you know, getting it treated. (All in all, Barnaby's got very moronic issues sometimes where a simple smack to the head could probably demonstrate all of your frustrations with some of the things he does.)

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
The BREW strips a character’s powers and other superhuman skills upon entering the game. What will be left from the abilities you wrote about in the Character Section? A guideline and allowed/disallowed examples can be found here. (http://soul-mods.livejournal.com/34046.html#cutid1)

- Barnaby will stay just as calculating. Smart and sharp when it comes to solving problems or understanding technology, these qualities will become quite necessary when there's fighting involved.
- He'll also maintain his strength and agility. Even without the hundred power, Barnaby's quick and packs quite a kick. Because of his training for becoming a hero, he's learned to handle himself in many ways that he doesn't need a supernatural ability to keep onto those.

What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
The BREW can cause a character to lose or gain weaknesses in the game, like powers, illnesses, or situational dis/advantages.

- Off the bat, he will lose his Hundred Power ability. This means no moving at a hundred times the speed, no becoming a hundred times stronger.
- This also removes the five-minute limit to using his powers and hour-long recovery period. Without his NEXT ability at all, he'll be able to last longer at his own strength, for a more consistent period of time.
- He'll keep his temper. Because it plays such a key role later in the series, it seems rather counterproductive to remove it.
- He'll also keep the rest of his personality problems.

The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
Keep in mind that BREW also brought Tohru Adachi, Jonathan Crane, and Angelika Einstürzen to Death City. Why it operates the way it does is a mystery: illuminate the possible reasons why your character was chosen. A summary of previous game activity can be found here. (http://soul-mods.livejournal.com/33669.html)

Barnaby is a hero. Strong, determined, capable of getting results, a good outward attitude, he's the sort of character who's called upon or summoned in order to take down a baddie or two. Heroes are meant to fight crime and protect the citizens. BREW would most likely summon him in order to see if those heroics could assist in keeping the Madness at bay.

If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game.
N/A

(Skip if this doesn’t apply)
As an example, Celty Sturluson from DRRR! doesn’t have a head, and thus can’t speak; however, she can and does communicate via typed text messages. How will your character communicate with others in Soul Campaign?

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
Barnaby has a very controlling and take-charge sort of attitude. He tends to take matters into his own hands and often rushes head-first into battle with his own assessment of the situation. He's very headstrong, and although he's technically on an equal level with his partner, he slides into a leadership role more naturally.

Barnaby's more comfortable with some sort of position that gives him a bit more direct control in a situation, especially when working in a team is involved, and would be more prone to cooperating more if he's given the ability to wield, as opposed to being wielded. Not only that, but Barnaby's investigative nature points him in a proper direction for being a Meister. The fact that he researches information on his own and decides what he should do with it shows that he's self-guided and takes initiative when he feels the cause is necessary. He's very driven.

Although he could be a decent enough weapon, were he in the hands of someone he could put full trust in, Barnaby only trusts Kotetsu and that sort of trust is very loose and watered down. He's very distant from others and although he doesn't mind when bosses give him work-related orders, there's almost no way a meister, any meister, would be able to get him to cooperate with them as a weapon. Without some sort of feeling of leadership, Barnaby wouldn't even agree with staying in a weapon form for long.

What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
Make a list of three chosen or created abilities and we will select one. Examples of Meister abilities can be found in the Meister Directory here. (http://soul-mods.livejournal.com/18175.html)

Item Detection - Kotetsu T. Kaburagi (granted, if Kotetsu is accepted). The creators have specified that Kotetsu and Barnaby have a special sort of bond, and the two tend to know when to aid one another, whether in battle or not; even if they aren't paired as a Meister-Weapon duo, Barnaby would still be able to seek out and find his partner, whether he wants to or not.

Insane Soul - although Barnaby has a very calm interior, he snaps, and easily, if one knows how to push his buttons. Besides common irritations, hurting loved ones, or even knowing the slightest bit of extra information that could lead to Barnaby finding out who murdered his parents tends to send him into a panicked, nearly-uncontrollable frenzy. Even past his current canon-point, it's shown that Barnaby's attitude and sudden moodswings do not get better with time, but care and a close bond with a partner. He could easily succumb to Madness this way.

Soul Boost - it's been proven that Barnaby and Kotetsu work better as a pair than on their own. This proves that, once a certain trust has been created within a pair, Barnaby's stronger and can create more positive results when teamed up with a partner, or, in this case, his weapon.

...it's a mirror. [oh little communication device, Barnaby is eyeing you and hard. He's fully aware that he's turned it on, and although he's still working on trying to properly grasp this device's functionality, his mind keeps returning to how silly this feels. So, after a long, long moment of him just fixing a stern glare at the device, he takes a breath.]

This is seriously the silliest thing...

Alright. Since... I'm assuming this is connected to the network... I've been told that apparently people from our... same 'worlds' are here? [Though he looks kind of disturbed at saying that word. Having never left Sternbild, it's odd to think there's not just the one earth he is used to.] They suggested I ask if anyone's seen my coworkers. I'm Barnaby Brooks, Jr. and I'm looking for a man by the name of Kotetsu Kaburagi. He's near my height, has an oddly-trimmed beard, and wears a hat and vest. ...or rather, anyone from Sternbild would do as well. If you've seen anyone who matches that description or know anyone from Sternbild, please let me know.

Thank you.

[Then, with one last stern look--face torn between disturbed and annoyed--he turns off his mirror. Click!]

Provide a Third Person sample set during the last minutes on their world and/or their first few moments in the Kishin Chamber.
Please make this at least three paragraphs. We want to see how well you grasp your character’s voice.

The moment Barnaby's eyes met with darkness, his fists clenched. He just knew something wasn't right--the first and most simple conclusion, especially since he awoke to a place that was definitely not his bedroom--but the fact that he was in a sort of room, physically unharmed, most likely meant that he was brought here. Kidnapped, perhaps. He already felt an apprehensive sort of anger building up at the fact that, with all signs currently pointing to his situation, someone managed to break into his apartment and catch him off guard.

That never happened. His hero training at the Academy was already enough to train him against sneak attacks. Even his current position as a hero, all of the fights he had fought, not once had he been caught unawares.

Well. Whatever his questions were, those would have to wait until he found someone capable of answering. Barnaby knew just questioning could not magically create results if he remained seated on this ground, questioning everything. And he wasn't passive enough to wait to be rescued. You couldn't be a hero if you were passive. Pulling himself to his feet, he began to walk forward, taking careful, deliberate steps.

He had to keep his eyes and ears peeled. With the minimal distractions from his own footsteps, he took note of the room--hall? building?--he was in. Although it was dark, large red pillars covered in caution signs... Chains hanging above... He paused, eyes following the chains to a brighter location behind him. There was more tape, more bright yellow pieces warning anyone nearby to approach with the utmost caution. Inwardly, Barnaby began to worry if he was placed in some sort of chamber with a dangerous creature.

His fists tightened more, to the point where he could feel his nails digging into his palm. He would activate his powers at a moment's notice, but not yet, not until he knew he needed them. The restriction on his ability, the fact that he'd have to wait a full hour after five minutes of usage, meant he couldn't activate it yet, not until he knew what he needed to fight. But what was there to fight? What unknown danger was he about to face? Barnaby turned around and started walking towards the collection of bold yellow warnings, his eyes gently easing up at the sight of more light--

And screens appeared, large and bright, a very unfamiliar man standing before him. Barnaby's first thought is that it's another individual working for Jake Martinez--

'That means this entire thing is a set-up, by Ouroboros, the people responsible for killing his parents--'

Death Scythe? That name was just as hideous as 'Kriem'. It took all the self-restraint he had in him to keep listening to the rest of the broadcast.

...and once it was done, he actually felt a bit silly.

[ NOTES ]
Any extra notes you may have go here.

I swear, guys. In the partnership, the story begins to revolve around both of them almost simultaneously rather than just one or the other once they start cooperating. Their ~glorious partnership~ is what's meant to truly drive the series, but their interactions with all other types of characters makes this series for what it is, and I plan on upholding that in the panfandom setting.
