MOVIES
This month I mostly watched movies that I've already seen.

Oh yeah, I forgot last month that I watched Wolf Creek. I guess it was a decent movie but I'm realizing more and more that I don't really love gorey slashers that much. Too stressful. I like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as it it so fucking scary that it's like a whole difference ( Read more... )

I don't think the reluctance toward slashers is wimpiness: I think it's just...you know it's coming, you just don't know where, and there's little in the way of surprises. It's just "who dies?" and there's little fun in figuring that out.

I need to watch more Cronenberg.

I completely agree on both counts! Cronenberg is an example of someone who uses violence in films in a way that I can roll with. Yes, it's grotesque, but it's part of the story and isn't just meant to be needlessly sadistic and bad-feelings-making. It's artistic and tragic and shocking in a way that I don't mind experiencing occasionally.

Not that I have some sort of comprehensive philosophy of when or why violence in movies is ok. I'm just going by gut feelings.

I kind of felt the way you seem to have felt about WOLF CREEK about CONTAGION, if'n that makes sense?

I think so. I am not sure I'd see Contagion or a movie like it again! Too stressful, and I don't really get much out of it. I guess I thought it was sort of interesting to see a movie about the CDC and the media and the public reacting to a plague in a somewhat realistic way.

It was a very pretty-lookin' film, I have to say!

You liked Antichrist better than Melancholia? I will accept this challenge.

Melancholia just felt so... minor? It was beautiful to look at and I guess I get the point and all, but I thought Antichrist was a more interesting story, more involving. Even though it was DISGUSTING!
