I couldn't agree more about the sore loser thing. (And yes, I know in that article she says she doesn't care if we think it's sour grapes, and she seems like an awesome old lady, but come on.) I haven't seen BBM, so I can't say which of the two movies was actually better, but I liked Crash quite a lot -- and while I wouldn't say it's the best movie I saw last year, I'm not horrified it won, either. I don't think it won because voters are homophobic or "soft liberals" or anything like that; it's just that Crash was about L.A., and made by/starred many of the voters' peers, and was just the type of project that would appeal more to the Hollywood types. In any case, the "best" movie of the year hardly ever wins the Oscar. Everybody knows the Oscars are kind of a joke. But I've never seen so many people so angry about a stupid award before -- especially when their movie picked up three other statues! And I have to wonder, why is Annie Proulx SO pissed off when she seems to think the Oscars are stupid and self-important, anyway?
Haven't seen either, but you and some other people have recommended Crash, so if it turns up on the cinema again, I'll go see it. It probably won't, though, but maybe I'll catch it on DVD some day.
