New Year's Eve found the Winter Queen and the vast majority of her Freehold in the ballroom of one of the fanciest hotels in town. It had been rented and decorated in Medea's colors, soft whites and greys, navy blue, silver and black ( Read more... )

Ananke is representing the Solstice Court, in a dress of white and black with a harlequin pattern. There's a definite smile on her lips as she flits about the ballroom, but a careful observer might note how wide a berth she gives to the local Freeholders and especially the Queen. She's graceful about it, making it look accidental as she seeks a new dance partner who's not one of Medea's.

"I am, yes. I never thought I'd be welcome at one of these events." Up close, there's a cloying sweet floral scent, perhaps not dissimilar to opium poppies in bloom. Ananke bobs a polite, playful curtsey. "How the times have changed."

Finally, the Magistrate's work is through for the season. Or at least, her work in that capacity. She can relax and enjoy the fruits of her labor; she's certainly dressed to. Abigail's in a diaphanous blue gown that looks like a galaxy, the stars seeming to twinkle in the fabric. Her hair's worn mostly loose, braids holding the rest out of her face, pinned with silver star to match the dress. The effect is stunning, and her confidence is clear. She lingers near the entryway, playing hostess, particularly for those who have no clue what they've stumbled into.

Abigail is, as always, the first person he greets. His bare hands slide around her waist, so that he can drop a kiss on her cheek. He's neatly groomed tonight, and all the faded clothing has been traded for something a little more stylish.

"Hello, lovely."

"Gavin." Her smile only grows as she returns the warm embrace. "You look fantastic. And I'm glad you came."

"Compliments from you, the woman with all the beauty of the night sky? I am flattered," he murmurs near her ear.

For a few weeks now, Peter and his mother had been going from one town to the other, making a living out of a few odd jobs, the help of family and the occassional five fingers discount if needed. Tonight, Peter thanks the date and the fact that most hotels do need extra help thanks to the several parties in honor of the new year to come. And its thanks to one of those parties that Peter has earned a job probably washing dishes in one of these hotel kitchens ( ... )

It's Abigail who spots Peter first, drifting over gracefully, a distinct smile lingering on her lips. "Welcome to the Winter Ball. Don't worry, the magic's harmless, and the suit won't disappear at midnight." It had been a while since she'd talked to him about funerals, but now he's on the turf of one of her ceremonials for the night.

At first Peter doesn't quite recognize her, maybe due to her own new looks and how overwhelmed he still feels over the change. "A magic Winter Ball? What is this? The Wicca New Year's Eve party?" Peter asks, still looking down at his own suit, like a dog chasing after its own tail.

"Not Wiccan, no. The rest, well. Yes. Magic, very. Winter Ball, exactly. There's food if you're hungry, and no shortage of dance partners if you care to dance." She grins at his reaction. "And you get to keep the suit, if you'd like. Though your old clothes are gone." Luckily, anything kept in pockets has been moved.

Unlike most of the changelings in the room, Bunny had relied on the magic of the doorway to provide his outfit. Suitably attired, he made a beeline for the food.

"Why're you smelling me to begin with? A guy's smell should be something not to broadcast all over to everyone, really. Don't sniff at me, please?" Sheepishly, he takes a small step away from Scarlet, practically babbling at her question. She might notice all the food on his plate is vegetable matter; perfect little preybeast.

"There's trouble around. I'm hoping it doesn't show up here. Security, while not lax, isn't comprised of people I trust as much as I'd like." Medea glances sidelong at Scarlet, and then smiles slowly. "You look amazing, though, and I've heard people say good things about the foods."

"If you see anything--particularly a big man who looks like a viking and makes the air taste like war and bloodlust--be careful, but he's the threat I'm most concerned about right now." Little does Medea know that the Baron's wearing an unfamiliar form these days. She's still expecting Rothbart, the form she knew him in best.

But for the moment, everything seems calm, and she raises her own glass to echo the salute. The blue liquid in her champagne flute seems to chime softly in the glass. "I can't claim much of the responsibility for people being happy with the ball. Or the year, I don't think."
