These days, we're short on civic virtues. And the people who ought be working to instill 'em can't agree what they should be or have thrown in the towel completely.

It's a bit of a troubling situation.

But William James is great. Father of American psychology, pragmatic philosophy, and generally speaking, one of the few people of his age to make being open-minded a virtue. (By this, I don't mean trendily tolerant, but genuinely open-minded).
