He was incredible. He taught me how to be a healthy cynic.

He taught me a lot more than that. How to laugh when there's not much to laugh about. So many things.

I am truly grieving.

Great post! I'm so glad you're teaching him. You will live on in the hearts of many of your students for doing so, I'm quite sure.

I love the quote from Asimov's funeral-- that's terrific.

My fave is "Mother Night." Have you seen the film version? I want to check it out. Nick Nolte is in it and it came out in '96.

I thought it was pretty tolerable--much better than the version of Slaughterhouse-Five floating around, and much much better than the Breakfast of Champions movie.

I've been saying to myself for years that I need to read more of his works. I read most of Hocus Pocus at ... well, younger than people should really be reading Vonnegut I guess. Ten or eleven. The cover blurb was 'People said the world would end in the year 2000. It's now 2001, so I guess God must not be heavily into numerology.'

To understand that the world is sad and that it is still important to be kind is a great wisdom, I think.
