The Vietnam era was when the monoculture in the US really started to crack open for good, I think, and so now when we have a new way of thinking (and we have plenty, plenty of good systematic thinking and plenty of good humanitarian thinking) it doesn't spread through a system of cultural authority in the same way, and we are prosperous enough that new forms of repression haven't really been brought down hard yet, though they're starting to crunch on the poor again pretty fiercely.

It is one of the things I hate absolutely the most about people, their ability to rationalize away a lot of evils that simply don't affect them directly.

Seems reasonable. We do seem to be recycling the same tired old ideas when it comes to this war. It doesn't lend itself to optimism.
