Fic: On The Outside Looking In

Jan 01, 2009 23:26

I wrote fic! For the day one prompt at redismycolour. I don't know if I'm gonna do every day, but I really want to at least try when the prompts inspire me. This one I saw and had no initial ideas, started to write and it just sort of...flowed? It's not very good, but a contribution is a contribution right?

Title: On the Outside Looking In
Rating: PG I suppose, but it's pretty tame.
Characters/Pairing: Jack, Ianto, Gwen. Jack/Ianto, Ianto/Gwen friendship.
Spoilers: It's set post Exit Wounds, so spoilers for that.

Word Count: 912
Summary: The team enjoy an evening at the Christmas fair, and Jack watches Ianto and Gwen ice skating.

On The Outside Looking In

Jack sighed, raising his eyes to the pink streaked sky. Of course Gwen wanted to ice skate, and now she was pulling on Ianto's gloved hand, trying to persuade him to skate with her. Ianto didn't look too enthusiastic at the prospect either.

“Oh come on, Ianto!” she grinned, looking up at Ianto with wide eyes. Jack smiled, Ianto was a goner.

Ianto looked over at Jack, asking him if he minded with just his eyes. Gwen, sensing their silent conversation, fell silent at Ianto's side still clutching his gloved hand with her own.

Jack could tell that Ianto was unsure about leaving Jack on his own, despite the crowds and the happy, twinkling lights. It was a happy atmosphere, joyous even despite the bitter cold, but Ianto knew that loneliness was often found amongst other people enjoying themselves. The fact that Ianto was concerned about him (especially since the loss of Tosh and Owen, all three had been significantly more protective of each other. There was so much more at risk now, so much more to lose. Sometimes Jack thought he could almost feel their time ticking away. He would never get used to this, never.) tightened his chest a little.

“You two go have fun,” said Jack, hoping that the merry music and children's laughter surrounding them hid the strain in his voice, “I'll wait for you.”

Gwen thanked Jack with a sweet smile and proceeded to drag a still unsure Ianto to the rink. Jack carefully chose a spot to stand and watch them, and chuckled to himself when Ianto fumbled with the laces on his skates. Jack was near the carousel, and he could smell the warm sugar drifting over from the candy floss sellers.

He watched Gwen and Ianto finally venture onto the ice, holding onto each other for dear life. As the sun was setting and the sky grew darker, the soft multicoloured lights made the ice rink shine like the aurora. Gwen shone, and Ianto shone wrapped around her, smile bright on his face and cheeks rosy with the cold. Jack could see their lips moving but didn't try to figure out what they were saying - it was a private moment, not meant for him.

Gwen slipped then, but Ianto's strong arms stopped her from falling onto the ice. It made Jack's heart warm to see them this way, so close and just normal.

It didn't surprise Jack that Ianto was good at skating, somehow he'd known already. Jack smiled as Ianto and Gwen's skating got a little more daring and inventive with twirls and little lifts. Gwen's hair was swept back from her face, her eyes and smile wide. Jack was just about close enough to see their breath, two clouds of white mist becoming one in their closeness. Jack didn't think he'd seen either of them more beautiful than they were at this moment.

Jack watched them for a few more minutes, twirling about together and laughing. He leaned on the metal rail that surrounded the ice rink, his vision focussed on Gwen and Ianto (his team) silhouetted against the rapidly darkening sky and twinkling lights of the fair. They were everything.

He unconsciously straightened up a little when Ianto left Gwen alone on the ice and skated over to him, gracefully. Jack's eyes were glued to Ianto's long, lean legs and then on his lips, pink like his cheeks and slightly parted as of he was about to say something.

But Jack didn't give him a chance to speak. As soon as Ianto glided to a stop in front of him, Jack's hand curled around Ianto's head and pulled him into a kiss. Jack smiled against Ianto's lips as he imagined the picture they must make, snogging like teenagers with the barrier between them. Jack could tell Ianto was surprised, as the other man lost his balance slightly, leaning into Jack as he did so. Jack took advantage of this and slipped his tongue between Ianto's parted lips. The intense heat of Ianto's mouth was almost overwhelming. Jack thought (he knew) that he could get lost in it.

This was the last coherent thought Jack had for the next five minutes, as the kiss intensified, ignorant of it's surroundings. Jack was vaguely aware that his fingers were tangled in Ianto's hair and that Ianto's fingers were red from clutching at Jack's lapels.

Gradually, the kiss slowed and they parted, settling for being close and breathing into each others mouths. Their noses touched for an instant, a flash of cold.

“What was that for?” asked Ianto, pleased by the unexpected show of affection but slightly confused by it.

“Can't I just kiss you because I want to kiss you?” smiled Jack, '”Does there have to be a reason?” He warmed his cold nose by nuzzling Ianto's warm neck and just taking him in. While he still could.

Ianto chuckled and released his fingers from Jack's lapels. Jack pouted slightly at the loss of Ianto's body heat. He glanced over Ianto's shoulder at Gwen, who was still standing alone in the middle of the ice waiting for Ianto to return.

“Go back to Gwen,” Jack said as he idly stroked the back of Ianto's hand with his fingertips. “She's waiting for you.”

Ianto leaned over the barrier and kissed Jack softly on the lips, then he was gone again, leaving Jack with only a gust of chilly air. Despite this, Jack was still smiling.
