Summary: This is just my speculation on a certain scene in the teaser trailer; I’m sure all you guys know which scene I’m on about.
Something To Remember Me By
The time passed in heartbeats, precious seconds hurtling by like speeding swallows. Fingertips flew across keyboards, frantic eyes focussing on computer screens that told them that the end was coming, and it was coming soon.
Their breaths were ragged and their throats tight, because it was getting closer. Time was snapping at their heels and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it, nothing to stop it happening.
When the time came, Ianto hesitated. He didn’t want to leave Jack behind, but they’d already discussed it to death and frankly they didn’t have the time for hesitation. There wasn’t time for Ianto to be thinking of saving things, although he desperately wanted to collect mementoes, at least grab the paperweight Tosh had bought him just two weeks before she died.
Ianto’s breath caught in his throat when Jack gently but firmly manoeuvred him onto the base of the lift. Ianto went this time, because he didn't want to make it any harder than it already had to be. Then they were standing there, with too much space between and faces bathed in the red glow of emergency lights.
“Jack,” said Ianto, softly, his voice almost breaking.
“I have to stay here,” Jack replied quietly, not needing to say it but saying it anyway. “A captain always goes down with his ship,” he said, attempting to inject some light heartedness into his voice; trying to make the situation a little less final.
“So out of all the moments you could’ve chosen, you choose this one to be proper?” asked Ianto, rolling his eyes. Jack’s eyes were warm for an instant before they clouded over again.
“Jack,” Ianto said again, unsure of what else to say. He wanted to say so many things, things he’d always thought he’d say in this kind of situation, things they said in the movies, something significant. Thank you. I’m sorry. So, it’s been fun, I’ll try not to die.
But Jack spoke before Ianto was able to articulate his thoughts with the right words. And Jack’s voice was so normal, warm and theatrical and cliché, that Ianto could hardly bear it.
“First, have something to remember me by.” Something to remember you by.
Jack curled his fingers behind Ianto’s head and closed the gap between them, crushing their lips together. It was a messy kiss, full of teeth tongue and saliva, but Ianto wouldn’t have it any other way. They searched each other’s mouths with urgent tongues, allowing them to pretend, just for a moment that they weren’t about to be torn apart.
They pulled apart, mouths swollen and eyes wide. Ianto wanted to kiss him again because it might be the last chance he had, but they didn’t have the time. But he supposed that time was always going to cheat them in the end, it was inevitable.
Ianto didn’t even notice Jack reaching for his wrist strap to activate the lift. Ianto jerked back in surprise, falling away from Jack’s touch. Ianto leaned down, straining his neck as he pressed his lips softly against Jack’s. Chaste and almost bittersweet this time. Their lips clung together until Ianto was too high. Ianto cast a nervous glance upwards, uncertain of what exactly awaited him on the Plass. He looked back down, trying desperately to commit the Hub to memory but all he could remember was the slide of Jack’s tongue against his own and the way Jack had communicated everything that couldn’t be said into a single kiss.
As the exit above him opened, Ianto could smell the tang of gunpowder drifting down. He steeled himself, quickly because he had to, before fixing his eyes, determinedly at the square of night sky over his head. He took a deep breath, inhaling the calm before the chaos, and he was ready.
End
Note: This is just my take on how the kiss would happen. But I'm still not sure about it, but I'm biting the bullet and posting it anyway.
