Maybe you've seen this coming

But then again, maybe you haven't. After months of consideration, I've decided not to write Harry Potter fanfiction anymore. The reasons for this are numerous and complex, but it all boils down to a simple one: I just don't find it exciting anymore. I still enjoy reading the odd good fic that is thrown my way, and character and ship debates, and I ( Read more... )

I know what you mean. After you've been a fan of HP for a long time, things may start to seem a little bland.

I look forward to reading your original fiction. :)

Yeah. I started writing fanfiction in 2002 and publishing it online in 2003, and while I've done some LOTR poems it was mostly HP stuff. At that stage I couldn't type fast enough to keep up with my ideas, but during the last year or so they just kind of trickled off. I've been wanting to try and write original fiction for a while and just don't think I can pull it off if I'm as immersed as I have to be in JKR's world to write good fanfiction. I know it's important to read good books if you want to write them, but I'd like time for my own ideas to develop.

Completely understandable. I hope that you find the inspiration and time to work on some of your ideas. I have also been writing fanfic in 2002, or at least joined an rpg. :)

I realised that I was getting tired of writing HP fanfiction when I was only working during the afternoons and evenings in the summer and had oodles of time on my hands, yet didn't feel remotely inclined to join any RPGs, even when there were characters available that I previously would have jumped at the chance to play.

It's sad to hear that, but ultimately understandable. No point in pushing yourself to do something in that way. I hope you do get to finish WALHFMF, but I've enjoyed reading all of yor fics so far so much that I'm just glad you wrote those in the first place :)

Aww, thank you hon. I feel guilty about the two unfinished chapter fics I have (although on the bright side, my Arthur/Mollyverse is the only thing HP-related I feel remotely inclined to write), but I'm just not feeling it anymore and I think it will show. Ultimately I wouldn't expect one of you to continue writing HP fanfiction if you no longer wanted to, no matter how much I loved your fics, so I knew that you guys would understand :) Besides, I'm not saying never. I just don't see myself investing a lot of time in the fandom in the foreseeable future.

You have been at this quite some time, no wonder you feel ready to move on. I'll be looking forward to reading about your own original work.

Yeah, I figured either I could continue playing it safe and writing fanfiction, which I know I can write well, or I could take a risk by testing the waters and try to write something original, which is ultimately why I started writing in the first place. Everyone has been so encouraging; I just hope that my own stuff measures up to expectations!
