Lovely pics! Shame the steepness of Butser Hill never shows up on photos.
I find the western end of the SDW has a much more remote feeling than the Brighton to Eastbourne bit (enough so I know some people have been spooked out doing it). Good on you!
Did you go past the large abandoned military complex? (all barbed wire fences, dereliction, and sheep roaming inside to keep the grass down).
I know a lot people, especially women, are quite uncomfortable walking on their own, particularly in isolated spots. But it never occurs to me to be scared, which is slightly odd considering I'm a big wuss about so many other things! I always feel very safe and protected out in the countryside, with the occasional exception when being menaced by giant cows etc... Yes, I do think the western end feels more remote - although I'm sure the contrast is more evident if you walk the whole thing in summer. There were very few people about in the spring showery weather.
I dipped off the Way so I didn't go past the military complex - is that the same thing as the naval base? I had read that it was a prettier walk to come off the way down to East Meon, which also provided a convenient lunch stop, and then get back on it around Coombe, just after the village.
