how the hell do people take all these beautiful pictures at night (or in very dark rooms)? Mine always suck, either very blurry and/or the digital camera I'm using adds A LOT of light to the picture making it much brighter than it really is.

Tripod and a remote shutter control. And yes...longer exposure time.
