I am being actively recruited by my Biochemistry professor start on a maters in Biomedical Technology. He has a fellowship for me of $20,000 a year. The fellowship is guaranteed for 2-3 years and helps placement into a PhD program. $20,000 is a very small amount compared to other masters/PhD programs, but it is certainly in a whole different scope ( Read more... )

while it wasn't anything close to medicine or biology ... going to grad school was one of the best choices i've ever made. i wouldn't be where i am right now without it, and i'm pretty happy where i am.

the biotech industry is seriously hot. it's a good path.

There were a few bad years in there, but on the whole I'm glad I went to grad school and I'm glad I followed my dreams instead of being scared away. I'd like to think that the idea that you can't have a family and be a doctor or scientist is kind of outdated--sure it's hard, but so is having any job and having a family.

For some perspective on being a female scientist with a family, I like this blog: http://science-professor.blogspot.com/

If you're doing what you love, the practical issues (the job market, making time for family, sacrifices and hard work) will sort themselves out.

hey lady. it's been a long time, but it thought i would chime in seeing as i'm in my last semester of grad school.

it's hard...exhausting...frustrating and totally worth it. there will be days when you can't understand why you ever thought it would be a good idea, but then there are those days when the "ah ha" moment happens and you couldn't imagine any other choice.

whatever choice you make will be the right choice for you. sit for a while and listen to yourself. you know what you really want and need.

good luck!

Having just finished grad school I can say that though it gets tough at times it is well worth it. The hard times are balanced by great times, and the networking alone that you do in graduate school can open so many doors. Plus, I think you could get an 1100 on the GRE with your eyes closed.
