One Nation Under a Groove

In honor of tomorrow's inauguration, I present "Paint the White House Black" by George Clinton and friends. Sadly, I don't think Obama's presidency is likely to be as awesomely funkadelic as Clinton's would be.

I remember loving that single when it came out. I was thirteen, I think.

man, my little 10 y/o self was so clueless around that time that i thought "MC Hammer" (of "Hammer Time" fame) was called "NC Hammer" (after my home state of North Carolina). You were miles, miles ahead of me.

Somewhere online in a darkened archive is a record of my activities as a twelve year-old serving on a "committee" to bring rap music to the internet. We did a letter writing campaign to criticize the lack of black music on MTV at the time (ca. 1992). I felt like I was making a difference, little Public Enemy obsessed kid I was.

Now in an arguably oversaturated milieux of hiphop, I find myself occasionally longing for the playlists of 1992 again. Back when I'd see Depeche Mode videos. Ah well.
