So, I have been commenting on a thread on a friend of mine's facebook page and I wrote something that I think is rather well stated (prideful as that might be) and I wanted to save it and share it. I'm not sure if you were looking for responses to your post or just hoping to record it for future reference. If the latter, please feel free to ignore the following. :)

I hate the word "tolerance." I'm sure people started using it with the best of intentions, but too often these days it just means, "You have to accept everything that I think is right/acceptable without having to actually deal with me as a human being." I don't want to have to accept what other people believe. I don't want people to accept what I believe. What I want is to attempt to understand the people who believe those things. To care for and love them even if their beliefs don't align with mine. I know that sounds very pie in the sky, and I certainly don't think I'm capable of always loving and caring for others when I find their beliefs anathema, but I'd rather try to understand a person and why they think what they do and still disagree than blithely pat them on the back and say, "Yeah, it's all good. Whatever you think is what you think, man ( ... )
