I think what Nigel (the third judge) said around 6:11 of this applies to your friend's situation

Frankly, I am like that too when I perform. Yes it's great to get compliments and kudos, but it's even better to get constructive criticisms so that I have something bigger and better to strive for. Unfortunately I think your friend got more of the "That woman in a dress is ugly" instead of the "I think that dress would look better in blue".
