That's more or less what a lot of ppl I know have been saying. I'm still going to pick it up eventually, but it's not a priority (I've got some serious Deicide (and Titanacide?) to do first :P ) I don't mind not knowing who the true villain is. It was cool in VIII, but then again, the game was more about relationships than the big bad guy you're chasing. It's not some big evil guy like Sephiroth, Sin, or Exdeath. They also pulled it off well in IV w/Golbez and Zeromus. But yeah, I'll get it eventually.
