Why do we do philosophy?

I know if someone in particular was reading this she'd know where I'm coming from on this one, but anyway....

So for a friend's long test in philo, I helped her come up with an answer to their teacher's question: "Why do we do philosophy?  What is the point of philosophy?"

well. i like to say that the problem with Ateneo's philosophy classes is that it leaves students under the presumption that they can philosophize.

Well, ya, that's a problem too, although i'm not sure if the problem there lies with the set-up, or with the students, because sometimes students can be presumptuous (actually, students invariably are presumptuous), especially Ateneans. Jesuits make them think that they're being liberated, when in fact Jesuits are only undoing pre-programmed thought to replace it with Jesuit programming, and it's this bit that they don't tell students. So in the end, you have students thinking they've been liberated, but in fact they've onle been reprogrammed. Actually, my electronics teacher has a term that fits very well to Ateneo philosophy...mental masturbation.
