Most big stores throw out food that they deem to be unsaleable, sometimes for cosmetic reasons but usually because the sell-by date has passed. If you dumpster soon after they throw the food out, you can often score very edible veggies and baked goods and any of the things I mentioned above.

just in case you weren't aware of this marvelous sort of trick. when you dumpster bread or bagels, or just have some stale ones around just get them wet all over the outside and put them in the oven until they are nice and crispy on the outside and badda bing its like fresh baked bread all over again cheers
I work at a trader joe's ine hewlett, long island - and yes, we have to take off of the shelf anything that is out of code - past the sell date. We donate as much of that stuff as we can though, shame on the store by you for trashing all of it, for sure. and by the way, the approximate worth of your dumpster run : $52.18. I made that up, but it's probably not too far off.
and uh, i've been reading your journal for a couple of months off and on, and you are - brilliant -

Also soaking limp veggies (carrots, lettuce, celery) in water to ressucitate their crispiness has proved fruitful.
