Now XOOS has a bunch of useful objects: Display, Mouse, Keyboard, Wifi, File. It's easy to imagine building a Smalltalk-like environment on top of these.

The Io programming language looks extremely interesting.
It's an ultra-minimal ultra-late-bound prototype-based object-oriented language. The minimalisim seems to scale: the example code written using the comically minimal core looks much the same as the real code found inside the tarball (e.g. OpenGL bindings). On the way to bed I started pondering a virtual machine that executes SEXPs directly. Suppose you programmed it with a debugger that was able to inspect and modify its own structure. Then you'd have the interesting situation of the program source code and the executing machine code being one and the same thing. Do you know a system like this?
