Well the Olympics served in the ancient world as a means for healthy competition against your enemies... It is more the history of the Olypmpics that I enjoy rather than the the new hype it receives now... Sport & all forms of physical activity & the pomp & spleandour that surrounded it in ancient Rome served to bring a constantly warring nation back to normality after intense periods of civil unrest & social upheaval. The qaestors & aediles got to throw their weight around & impress the plebs so they would get their vote, & the plebs liked to see people get murdered & drink a lot, naturally. It was also a massive celebration of & sacrifice to their gods. But you get the point, the olypics & games in general were their public holidays, which we Australians are such massive fans of
