I recently started running a few times a week on the elliptical at the gym. It's pretty great, and I have more stamina than I should, although I suspect that running on pavement would kill me (sketchy knees). Good on you for braving the outdoors for the first time! Sad fact: I live in terror of treadmills. I was thrown from one the second I tried actually running.
I'm afraid of them, too! I usually follow this routine when using one:
Get on. Go to spot on machine where I want to run. Straddle the neighborhood of the belt while figuring out what speed & incline to use... then start running at my normal pace before the belt really starts going.... while holding onto the handles for a few seconds while I situate.
