On January 3rd, 2012, I went to a public bath house for an evening bath in Kuttari, 20 minutes west of my town in Tokachi, Hokkaido.
Sun streams in from the big windows, peppered by condensation and fog, lighting the open baths. It’s muggy, of course, and loud, the sound of rushing water floods my ears as I make my way over to the showers.
Seated on a pink plastic stool, I fill my bucket and wash my hair, my body and ignore the darting glances of the other naked women as they wonder what a foreigner is doing at a bath house. Finished, I don’t bother pinning my hair up. I love the feeling of hot water floating through my hair and the water washing over my body. Massage shower first for my shoulders, followed by the Jacuzzi beds for my aching hip and then the bubble pool. The outside bath is next.
I love floating in the outside hot pool: close to the river, it offers a perfect view of the night moon. Peaceful and content, this is the place where I feel truly alive, happy and healthy. Romancing the moon, she romances me back and before we part ways and I re-dress and drive home, I offer her a short poem of heartfelt thanks.
