I finished the BF "The Company of Friends" audio ages ago, and never got around to writing up more of my thoughts on it, which I'm sure you were dying to read ( Read more... )

When does he wheeze?

You didn't say anything about the Mary Shelley story - what did you think? Husband and I both thought it was fabulous.

Oh, and I think I need you swipe your icon, if I'm allowed. In fact, I may need to make it my default.

The wheezing was in the Mary Shelley story, actually. When Future!Eight ("Doctor Frankenstein") shows up, he's making all kinds of wheezing, unhappy noises, and somehow I recognized McGann's voice just based on those noises and felt like a huge geek. But, then, I suppose the other thing going on was that one assumes that when the Doctor is yet to appear in a Doctor Who story, and a mysterious, angsty stranger appears, it's probably him.

Anyway, yeah, it really was fabulous. And absolutely terrifying, too. I was seriously flipping out. Although the drama was a bit ruined by speculating whether or not McGann was actually making the monstery noises (uuurrrgh! raaaaaar!) Future!Eight makes after they zap him, or whether they brought in someone better-suited to the task (McGann is so little and soft-spoken!) but that's hardly fair of me to giggle over.

Go ahead and gank the icon, just credit nilhuanwen.

Now I have to go back and listen to it again, because it's been a few months. But now that you mention it, I think I had some of the same thoughts - wondering if McGann was doing some of the noises. I must say that I disagree with you that he's not suited to do it. He's soft-spoken, but he's got some serious power behind those vocal chords when he chooses to use it. Really, his voice is too big to fit in that little body. (*Stops just short of making 'bigger on the inside' reference*). I keep going back to the cliffhanger at the end of the audio "Neverland" - which, if I recall you haven't listened to, so I won't give away any spoilers expect to mention that it's nothing short of stunning. Best cliffhanger in the entire Whoniverse, if you ask me, and there's *no* other Doctor who could've delivered that last line with anywhere *near* the power that McGann did.

Thanks for the icon!
