I recently wrote this letter to my Senators:
Dear Senator,
I am deeply disturbed that the Senate is considering passing a resolution that encourages Israel's recent ugly attacks on Gaza civilians.
How can you say that the Senate "believes strongly that the lives of innocent civilians must be protected" and encourage this horrible business?
How can you imply that Israel has not impeded humanitarian aid with this comment "Whereas Israel has facilitated humanitarian aid to Gaza" when the International Red Cross reports that Israel forces have delayed such necessities as ambulances. Children starving in the streets is not such a level of facilitation that we should be praising Israel on the matter.
Whether or not you believe this to be in Israel's best interests, how is this in America's best interests? To tell the world that it is not just Israel killing these Palestinian civilians, but also America. That we support and encourage this from all accounts one sided slaughter. That no blame on the endless violence between the two parties should be ascribed to Israel. That it is all Hamas' fault, and that the dead and dying civilians, the starving and traumatized children are in no way Israel's responsibility. How is this in our interests?
No doubt Hamas bears some responsibility, but to take such an uneven-handed approach is hardly justified.
If you see no moral or ethical reason to protest, for the love of humanity, how can you not stand up and protect our American soldiers who will most certainly bear some burden as a result of this misguided policy? I've heard nothing from my government but that all the horrible choices you make are made to "protect us". This does not, it cannot protect us. It makes us a target. The world would like to see us be even-handed. Your constituents are heavily divided as to the correct policy in Israel as described in this recent Rasmussen poll: (
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/americans_closely_divided_over_israel_s_gaza_attacks).
Consider taking a stand against this awful humanitarian disaster.
