I already have a huge issue with the fact that it is something that women have to go ask the pharmacist for when they want to purchase.

Actually, one group of plaintiffs was arguing exactly that point. That given that scientists believed it was safe for use with anyone with a period, that requiring that it be behind the counter was injuring adults too, since their access was also limited, and given the time-sensitive nature of the drug.
If the FDA approved it for OTC sale to everyone, no restrictions, which is what the plaintiffs were aiming for, then it wouldn't need to be behind the counter (although I could see a pharmacy not changing its stock layout immediately, I guess).
