Thanks, hon. I'm sure it'll all work out eventually.
The Rube Goldberg machine part was actually kind of funny in retrospect. I just wasn't willing to deal with it by the time it happened.

might be your alternator - I had a lot of battery probs in one car and it turned out not to be the battery at all

yeah, but usually when the alternator goes with this car it seems a little different. (lights dimming, radio cutting out). This was fine until we wanted to turn it on. And there wasn't really a period where it got worse and worse. Just seemed a little out of the blue.

Couple of things, batteries don't turn over;) , and sometimes they just die. Batteries are good for about 5 years and then they wear out. Short trips, stop and go traffic, these can wear battery out quickly.

Do you HAVE to go the dealership? If the car (and more specifically the battery) isn't under warranty don't bother. Pep Boys or somethng similar is a much more economical choice. Dealerships often overcharge for parts and labor. It has been my XP that the dealership is usually double what you would pay elsewhere.

Also batteries are pretty easy to change. They are heavy. But a battery is just two poles. Pop the old one out, pop the new one in. Should only need a screwdriver and pliers.

If I was sure it was just the battery, I'd go to pep boys. But when I'm not sure what the problem is, I'd rather go to the dealership to begin with. Yes, it's more expensive, but there's only so much time I have for futzing around trying to figure out what's wrong.

True. It could be something else but a new battery is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

And also batteries and alternators are pretty common repairs. Any place local would be able to do the repairs at a reasonable price. If you don't want to go to a "stranger" I have a guy I use who is excellent. I've always gotten fast, fair priced work and he gets it right the first time.

I don't mean to harp on this but I've always been adverse to using dealerships for anything other than warranty work because of their overcharging.

Ok. You've convinced me. :) I called Pep Boys and they confirmed they could handle alternator troubles, so we took it there. It certainly was closer. And also they have Sunday hours, so it's more likely to be done by Monday.
