I'm confused - the coverage of this has been confusing me for a couple of weeks now, and I couldn't figure out if it was good or not that the house had passed HCR. sigh. which is how bills usually are these days. but it sounds to me like Obama DOES support the stupak amendment... ie - he says federal money SHOULD NOT subsidize abortion providers, etc. Which I found disappointing. But maybe I'm missing something?

Obama's saying that the status quo ((no fed $ for abortions - google Hyde amendment, which came into affect circa 1976) should be maintained (which was already going to be the default anyway). The Stupak amendment goes beyond the status quo by making it impossible for _private_ insurers (that are also on the exchange, which will eventually be everyone) to cover abortions except in cases of rape and likely death. So, what Obama's saying is that he doesn't want abortion rights to be affected _in either direction_ by health insurance reform (ie... do that in another bill). Does that help?
