Yet Another 'New' Radio Station in Town

So, we have yet another 'new' station in town. I say 'new' because it like the other is an already established station that is changing its format to try and appeal to a different audience. However, this is at least the 3rd change in the last 3 or years for this frequency, so it is hard to call it new. Per the TV commercial I saw for them today, they play a little of everything. However, I have not heard any U2 yet! Of course, I have only listened for a little over an hour and a half... I also have not really heard any commercials either but they are tooting their own horn a lot between every third or fourth song or so. Seems to be the new way of promoting a radio station this days. They seem to play a decent variety so far, but most of it seems to be older "classic rock." This is not a bad thing for several reasons. The most important is that this type of music has very been uncompetitive in the local radio market for several years.

One local station seems to control it and they play the same 100-200 songs over and over, except when they have 'special' events. The coverage they give to some artists is just appalling! The other station has only 2-3 songs per major artist that they play over and over. For example, U2 (a major player during that era and yes, I admit that I have bias!) only gets Where The Streets Have No Name, With Or Without You, and I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For. That's sad no matter what your opinion of U2 is, and most people that know this era know that they have other hits that are part of the 80s and 90s that this station is trying to say that they play the most of in our area. They also claim to play the 70s, but I don't hear much of that either...

I am curious to see what direction this latest musical lineup change will go as most changes in radio have not been successful with the listeners in the area. I tend to area with them most of the time, with one major exception. Until I learn the fate of my DJ-friend, I will be listening to this for a while and until I determine if it is worth adding to my listening choices. More about this later... They seem a little odd in terms of attitude, but if the music is there, then I will just blame that on ego. I have already heard on this new station at least 3 different songs that the other radio station may play only once or twice over the course of the year!

The local website is under construction and their corporate one is of no help in getting clues yet. No DJs have been announced yet, so time to sit back, relax, and see what happens next...
