there is never a guarantee that doing the right thing will get you paid back in kind. in fact, most of the time it will probably get you fucked over. that doesn't mean you still shouldn't do it.

I agree. I will always keep trying do the right thing, because that is just how I was built. But doing so has lead me to lose my job and let people walk all over me, among many other things. It just sucks that people can generally be downright awful.
