Help me please =)

Could you all pitch in and give me good ideas of how to start a conversation online in mail form?
This is in particular to OkCupid, and perhaps Match.com. I feel much less comfertable with a. approaching people myself, and b. having anything to talk about or reference to in the area.

Ideas?

I've had success with recommending/accepting recommendations for books.
Only works if you share a preferred genre with the other conversationalist.

well i always like to start with a sentence being direct about why i'm contacting them... and then tell a little bit about yourself (music and movies a plus)... that's always a conversation starter for me.

Personally, I'd go for the shock tactic. Remember the guy I was dating during the summer I worked at Takajo? I met him via OkCupid, and the only reason I replied to his first move was that he pissed me off. Watching someone back-pedal, clarify, and apologize is strangely endearing.
