She returned his brief smile with one of her own, but a bit longer lasting. "I will do my best to not laugh at your serious questions, Mister Braxiatel. I don't have any control over anything but wind." Taking a sip of tea she sighed. He had helped save her from the Kirin and the plants, and had even ...walked over from the garden to do it. "Seeing next Saturday would be great," she agreed. "I'd like to get in some solid archery practice sometime. But getting home would be even better..." Her family must be so terribly worried by now. She had to do her best to work with the others and find the way home ( ... )

And it was 'Common' for Miss Sophie? It was an interesting idea that her Common could be English. What would make her think so?
"I don't see it the same as you," she answered them. "I see it in Japanese." With a grin she mused, "I wonder what it would look like if I wrote something out for you, because you can't change how the words are written even if you're able to understand them in the end... Well, maybe that doesn't matter."
"As for why I ask... I wonder." She despondently shifted her teacup as she laid out an explanation. "I was once in a situation where language was an important clue. We didn't find out the answer until it was too late, but... I just feel like nothing should be overlooked.
"Yet I can't quite figure out if it will all mean anything in the end. That the Deputy Drew sees it in Spanish and English, that Mister Xion has no name for his language, that ( ... )

She was glad that Mister Braxiatel had a theory about how the language was being translated, even though it was disconcerting. Where could the observers be keeping a computer big enough (even by 27th century standards?) to handle the processes? And that there was possibly a second mind... That was just downright disturbing. Almost as disturbing as imaging that the observers knew their very thoughts. She had thought that just restricting what was shown over the CATs might hide things from them, but perhaps that was too optimistic of her ( ... )
